What is knee buckling?

Knee buckling is a sudden and involuntary giving way of the knee joint, resulting in the individual losing control of their knee and potentially falling. It can occur due to a variety of reasons, including injury, muscle weakness, ligament instability, or other underlying medical conditions.

Knee buckling is often a sign of an underlying issue with the knee joint or its surrounding structures. Some common causes of knee buckling include ligament tears (such as an ACL tear), meniscus injuries, arthritis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, or muscle weakness in the quadriceps or hip muscles.

Treatment for knee buckling will depend on the underlying cause and may include physical therapy, strengthening exercises, bracing, or in some cases, surgery. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience frequent knee buckling episodes, as they can increase the risk of further injury or falls.
